Site freezes when trying to use cart

I'm a new visitor. Before creating an account, I picked out a few tasty add-ons, but I can't actually download anything. It seems the shopping-cart is broken -- whenever I try to go there (anonymous OR as a logged-in user), I get a '504 Gateway Time-out' error.
